Voyage of Stap Isi

During our last term of service in Papua New Guinea, we decided that in order to continue our ministry among the five language groups in the Lower Ramu area of PNG, we needed to purchase a live-aboard boat. This would give us the ability to travel between the different language groups and back and forth to our base in Madang. Furthermore, it would give us a place to live at each village, allowing us to spend more time building relationships with the people to whom God has called us to minister.

Returning to the US for furlough in 2003 gave us the opportunity to look for a sailboat that would meet our needs in PNG. In May 2004 we found and purchased the boat we were looking for - a Tartan 30 built in 1972. It is in good shape and is a fine, sea worthy boat.

In November 2004 we left Illinois to begin our 10,000 mile voyage back to PNG. Due to some health issues, we were forced to abort the trip and return to the US in May 2005 so that Kathy could consult with her specialist. We resumed our voyage in December of 2005, leaving Mobile for Papua New Guinea. During our nine month trip we crossed the Gulf, visited some of the islands of the western Caribbean, transitted the Panama Canal, and experienced the beauty of the South Pacific. We arrived in Madang, Papua New Guinea on September 4, 2006.
